Top Picks: Shoujo Manga.

Shoujo: Manga aimed at young (school age) women, usually depicting romance.

These are a bunch of my favorite Shoujo mangas. Theres no particular order, and no ratings as these are all the cream of the crop for me. The descriptions are short and sweet.

Love in the mask

The epic story of a girl from early childhood to adulthood. She begins in an orphanage, and not the happy kind, and even helplessly watched her close friend die. Soon after she is taken in by a wealthy family to be trained as a body guard for the young miss of the family. She was mistaken for a boy, however the head of the family gives her a chance, she must throw away being a girl from then on. Her life is particularly hard, and I don't recommend this for those looking for some light heart'ed comedy, you will cry, and not just the once. I read this with out putting it down, I just couldn't sleep thinking about what was going, and what might happen between the different characters.

Horimiya

This is the great high school love story between a boy who isn't what he seems, and the girl who tries desperately to hide what she really is like. Its a nice story, nothing crazy happens, no end of the world scenarios, or about to die plot twists, just a great story of two people. Its a smooth enjoyable read that I found myself going back and reading a second time because I simply wanted to. The main characters have great individuality's and the way the two mesh is kinda refreshing, the main boy at school is so average (even thought to be an otaku), but out of school he lets loose his hair, puts in earrings, and shows off his tattoos. The main girl, the popular school idol, loved and known by everyone, but at home shes a house wife type, cooking, cleaning, shopping (coupons). She takes care of her little brother and has no time for anything. These two make for a wonderful story, its ongoing, but so far its not to long.

Kaichou Wa Maidsama

I dont think anyone looking for good shoujo hasn't heard of this one. This is one of the best shoujo out there, it even has an anime released by the same name. I dont think I need to mention anything from the anime here, ill skip those bits, but the manga on the other hand goes far beyond the story of the anime. Our two main characters grow closer than ever as the face Usui's hardships. This manga is kinda of an adventure. Oh and if you havent watched the anime... DO IT.

Skip Beat

Another one of the biggies out there, super well known and amazing story (yes even better than Kaichou wa maidsama). There is an anime released for this one as well, and I do recommend it, it follows the manga pretty well. However, just like so many others, the anime is not the full story. This manga is ongoing still, and the story already reaches far out from the anime. Notice the pic, its from a part that's not in the anime. This story follows many of the same trends found in the anime, but the story starts to show A LOT more about Ren and his past. We even get to see Kyokos fairy prince return (yea, she noticed, he came up with a hilarious reason involving magic for looking like Ren).

Tokyo Rock Shounen/Nousatsu Rock Shounen

This is a bit unknown, and kinda niche. I love it, its a hidden identity story involving a high school rock star. The first (tokyo rock) is like a one shot, the second (nousatsu rock) is like the full story, and I think it even includes tokyo rock as its first chapter(s). The whole "ugly" duckling turned swan bit in this manga is seen often, but its great to see it done with a male and not a female this time around. Plus he has a great personality that makes him fun to watch. The girl is fairly average, but is a good person, her helping him when hes being bullied is what sparks this romance. Its a nice little manga, short, but very enjoyable.

Dengeki Daisy

Another great hidden identity shoujo, but his reason here is far darker in nature. Daisy, the name of a person who has looked out for the main girl, after her brother died. Daisy, is an expert hacker and shows off his skills when its needed to protect her during her high school days. She talks to Daisy almost daily, and always tells him her problems, almost like her human diary. They communicate via emails (text messages). You learn his identity fairly early in the manga, and get to see things from each of their points of views, its fun and interesting dynamic. Dont worry, it doesn't take till the end of the manga for her to find out who Daisy is, but what will she do when she learns the connection Daisy has to her big brothers death? Guess you will need to read it to learn about it.

Beast Master

Another niche type shoujo thats not well known, but that I love. Its short, and follows the story of a savage like boy (his face is super scary) who returns to japan after living in Africa for years. He is loved by animals, and is animal like himself, he is fiercely protective of the main girl who he comes to love. The story follows the "taming" of this wild boy, and facing the problems of his past (people trying to kill him). Its a sweet little love story, with a scary looking, but super nice and loving guy, and the girl who scares off all animals (she was first attracted to him because animals just came up to him).
